THE TSUM HISTORY CLUB

EVENTS
2001-2002

September 15               The second annual Burger Burn at Dr. Beatty's house went off
without a hitch, except that the entree was barbecue rather
than burgers.  The group also plotted the types of activities
they would like to have in the coming academic year.  Alas,
there are no pictures of the fun, as Dr. Beatty forgot to grab
his camera.  Next time, though, for sure.

January 25                     The January event was a luncheon at the Young House
restaurant in Old Alabama Town.  The highlight of the gathering
was remarks by our guest speaker, Ms. Johnnie Carr, who gave
us wonderful insight into the early civil rights movement and her
good friend, Rosa Parks, as well as other personalities such as
Dr. Martin Luther King.  She also shared her view of the race
relations and the challenges facing both the black and white
                                      communities.

April 06                          The April event was a field trip to Sturdevant Hall,
an antebellum mansion in Selma.  After a wonderful tour,
the group adjourned to "Lannies" to try their highly recommended
barbecue--and it was, indeed, good.  The TSUM historians then
climbed aboard their van and drove to Old "Cahawba," where they
wandered the same ground as the founders of Alabama back in
the early 1820s.  A great time was had by all.

August 24                       Tour of the Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham. It was a great
trip. The group left the parking lot of TSUM at 8:10 and
arrived at the Institute, after a brief stop for a fat fix, at
10:00 sharp. The tour consisted of an introductory film and
a walk through the displays. After departing, the historians
ambled around Kelly Ingram Park and the 16th Street
Baptist Church. After lunch in Birmingham, the group
returned to Montgomery--much more informed about the Civil
Rights Movement than they had been before.

Next event                      Still in planning.  Stayed tuned.
